Project Empty Shelter 2017

Saturday, December 9 – Sunday, December 10

Project Empty Shelter is back for its fifth year and aims to rehome all the animals in AWLQ’s care in time for Christmas.

We are calling on people to find a place in their hearts and homes to help hundreds of abandoned and surrendered animals. By choosing to adopt at Project Empty Shelter you will be rehoming an animal in need from one of AWLQ four Animal Rehoming Centres.

Adoption process on the day

Our AWLQ big adoption days can get VERY busy! We’ve put together a guide to help you out.

Find your new family member

For cats – you will be able to go into the enclosure to meet the cats

For dogs – a staff member or volunteer will need to get the dog out so you can meet
The dog’s kennel card will be marked ‘awaiting meet and greet’ and you will be given a ‘meet and greet’ slip with the dog’s details. Head to the meet and greet desk where you will be given a numbered ticket to place you in line for the next available staff member or volunteer to bring the dog out for you to meet.

When you have decided to adopt
  • Once you have met your purr-fect match, advise the assisting rehoming staff member or volunteer
  • You will be given an adoption slip with your pet’s details and your pets ID card will be marked as adopted
  • Please remember if you leave a pet to look at others before you have your adoption slip someone else can meet and adopt them
Make it official
  • Once you have your adoption slip, proceed to the dog or the cat customer service desk
  • You will be given a numbered ticket placing you in line to have your adoption paperwork completed
  • Take a seat in the waiting area and you will be given an adoption agreement to read
  • When it’s your turn your number you will be called to the adoption desk to complete paperwork and pay the adoption fee. You can also purchase anything your pet needs to set them up in their new home.
Home time
  • Once everything has been finalised a volunteer will bring your new pet to you
  • Don’t forget all cats need to go home in a cat carrier
  • All dogs need a collar and lead to help get them home safely

Tip – Our rehoming centres are very busy on AWLQ Project Empty Shelter days. If you are not sure what to do, or where to go, just ask one of our many helpful volunteers in purple shirts. They will point you in the right direction!

Tip – As we have so many wonderful people wanting to adopt during AWLQ Project Empty Shelter there will probably be a wait for assistance to do ‘meet and greets’ and to have your paperwork finalised. We have extra staff and volunteers on the ground to help and will do our best to make these exciting days run as smooth as possible. Please be patient and remember to smile and enjoy this wonderful experience.

Please note – Project Empty Shelter mega adoption drive discounted adoption fees exclude animals under the age of 6 months, purebreds and small breeds.

Did you miss the pet you thought was for you or couldn’t find the right match? Please don’t be disheartened. It just wasn’t meant to be…on the day that is! You have already made the amazing decision to change an animal’s life forever and adopt. We will always have animals needing homes.
