Rehoming

All our animals are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed (including heartworm tested in the case of dogs), and flea treated. They have also been health and temperament checked.

Our animals carry a 10 day health guarantee (covers any illness arising as a result of having been in our care), and a 21 day 'settling-in warranty'.

If an animal was surrendered, you can contact us at the Coombabah Rehoming Centre 5509-9000 or the Stapylton Rehoming Centre 3807-3782 for any additional information supplied  by the previous owner.

The shelter interviews people to ensure responsible pet ownership before rehoming.  We also like to check your existing pet's compatibility with its new companion.

Current dog owners interested in rehoming an AWL companion animal must bring with them their established dog(s) for a meet and greet.

Sometimes we have dogs and cats come into our care that because of their breed, or for other reasons, are more in demand and sought after. We ask a higher price for these animals to help fund the extra care required by some of their less fortunate mates.

The AWL does not receive any Govt. funding for its welfare work and is therefore reliant on our volunteers and the public's generosity.

Generally, the re-homing price for dogs and cats only just covers the veterinary costs incurred in de-sexing, vaccinating and micro-chipping, and the direct cost of providing daily care. Prices do not cover the many overheads associated with maintaining the Sanctuary and keeping our doors open.

We have a wide variety of breeds of both cats and dogs at any given time, both purebred and interesting cross-breeds. From the majestic Persian cats to always popular tabbies, large Mastiffs to the little Chihuahua crosses, we have them all at one time or another; just drop in! One thing is for certain: they all need a new home!

Please be patient while images load - we try to feature every animal available for rehoming.

Animals sold are flagged and removed three times a week, but a call to our office on 5509 9000 will quickly confirm if a particular animal is still available.

Advice for New Pet Owners:

  • Please select your new pet carefully .. they are for life!

  • Kittens and puppies are not generally suitable for homes with toddlers.

  • All animals are desexed prior to leaving our sanctuary.

  • These animals rely on you for a lifetime of feeding, veterinary care, grooming and affection.

  • They require yearly vaccinations, and intestinal worming every three months (and monthly heartworm treatment for all dogs over the age of six months). This is for their entire lifetime.

  • Cats require good quality cat food; table scraps are unsuitable as they are not nutritionally balanced, while good quality commercial tinned and dried foods contain added vitamins and minerals.

  • Dogs also require a good balanced diet, which should include good quality commercial dry and/or tinned food, and "some" table scraps (vegetables, rice, meat and pasta), as well as regular raw bones, and daily exercise.

  • Always keep in mind the breed/s of the dog and its eventual size in regard to exercise and food requirements.  Consider joining a dog training club in your area - your dog will love it, and so will you!

  • Council regulations require that all pets must be contained to their property at all times by means of a secure enclosure. Failing to provide a proper enclosure can attract an on-the-spot fine of $375.00 or a court imposed penalty of up to $3,750.00. For further information on enclosures for dogs and cats, please refer to the Council brochures 'Keeping Your Dog Contained' and 'Responsible Cat Ownership', both available at any Gold Coast City Council office or at the Animal Welfare League.

  • Remember! These creatures feel pain and discomfort just as we do - it is important to have injuries and illness treated by a qualified veterinary surgeon immediately.

  • Cats may take a couple of weeks to settle into their new homes; the car drive and new environment will unsettle most felines. Often the same is true in the case of dogs.
