If you have seen an animal on our website then it is available for adoption. Our website is updated every 15 minutes. REHOMED ANIMALS listed in our adoption section mean they have been adopted. This tab is a great way to see past guests to the shelter.
What does the AWLQ do?
The AWLQ specialises in the care, shelter, and rehoming of lost, stray and abandoned cats and dogs
I have found a stray animal – what do I do?
Check the animal for any form of ID. You will need to contact the council pound in the area you found the animal to notify them of a lost pet. They will be able to collect the animal if you cannot deliver it to the pound. Your closet vet clinic is also able to scan for a microchip and get in touch with the owner.
The AWLQ does not accept stray animals.
What do I do if I have lost my pet?
Please contact and visit your local pound to see if your animal is there. Make sure you microchip information is up to date Contact your local vet clinic to see if they have received an stray animals fitting your pets description
What does the adoption price cover?
The Animal Welfare League of Qld is a not for profit organisation and does not receive any government funding for the welfare work that we do. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of essentials like veterinary care, vaccinations and food. We do not have a time period on the animals in our care. They stay with us until they find a home.
What is the adoption process?

You are able to view and spend time with any of our animals available for adoption and our friendly staff will be able to help you with any further questions you may have. We have animals of all ages and sizes and can find you a pet to suit your lifestyle. You are welcome to bring an existing dog, children, family member to ensure the new pet is the right fit.
If you choose to adopt on the day you will need the following:
- A photo ID or Proof of age card – to adopt an animal you will need to be over 18
- If you rent please ensure you have permission from your landlord/home owner before taking an animal home
- If you have a collar/lead or cat carrier feel free to bring them with you or we have a shelter store with a beautiful range of products and food for you to purchase.
Do you put animals on hold?
Due to the number of enquiries we receive on particular animals we are unable to put an animal on hold. This is so we can find the animal a home as quickly as possible.
Do you keep a waiting list for certain breeds?
Unfortunately no because we receive far too many requests. If you are after a particular breed, please keep an eye on the adoption section of our website or download our phone app from the App store or on Google Play.
Are your animals desexed and microchipped?
Yes, all animals sold by the Animal Welfare League of Qld are desexed, microchipped, flea and worm treated and their initial vaccinations, even the kittens and puppies.
May I bring my dog to meet the dog I am considering purchasing?
Yes, please do! In fact, if you do have another dog, we want you to bring that dog into the neutral area that we have so that they can meet and we should all have a clear indication of whether they will be suitable together. If you have children, it’s a good idea to do the same when selecting an animal from us.

What does fostering mean?
Fostering is a great opportunity for people to look after animals who need some time away from the shelter due to medical or behavioural reasons. Some of these animals may be too young to be desexed or may just need some TLC to recover from an injury or illness.

I can’t keep my pet anymore how can you help?
If you need to surrender your pet please note that there are dozens of people in the same situation. For that reason it is important to call us well in advance of you having to give up your pet as we do have a waiting list you will need to register your pet on. For more information CLICK HERE.
What types of payments do you accept?
Cash, Visa, Mastercard and EFTPOS only. Sorry, no cheques, Diners or AMEX.

Do you have a boarding facility?
No we do not have space available for boarding. If you are going away please ensure you think about your pets plans early to ensure boarding kennels have available space (especially during busy holiday periods).

Do you board cats and dogs for the public while they are on holidays?
No. We do not have the space available for boarding. See your Yellow Pages for listings of commercial boarding kennels and catteries. Always visit them prior to making a booking.
What is AWLQ's refund policy?
Please choose carefully and retain your receipt information or docket. We do not normally give refunds if you simply change your mind or make the wrong selection
You can choose between a refund, exchange or credit where goods are faulty, wrongly described, different from a sample shown to you or don’t do what they are supposed to.
In regards to online purchases such as volunteer inductions and AWLQ education courses, if under a change of personal circumstance you are no longer able to volunteer or attend an education course, simply contact the relevant AWLQ department about organising a refund.
Should you believe a mistake has been made in relation to a donation payment, please contact email@example.com with the date, amount, name of donor, receipt number and nature of the error. We will investigate all enquiries on a case by case basis. However, refunds will not automatically be issued because you have changed your mind
