Supporting Pets and Their People at Homeless Connect
We had another successful day at this year’s Brisbane and Gold Coast Homeless Connect events during July and August, as part of National Homelessness Week. This important event brings together community organisations to provide support and essential services for people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.
Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) was on hand to make sure our furry friends didn’t miss out. Thank you to all the AWLQ staff who assisted with providing pet food and items for the event. A special shout-out goes to our dedicated staff and volunteers – their hard work and positivity were fantastic!
At this year’s Gold Coast event, we were able to assist 303 guests, and once again, AWLQ was one of the most popular services at the event. Many guests shared that while they have access to services for themselves, it’s their pets that often miss out. It’s incredibly rewarding to see AWLQ provide this vital support, reaching both pets and their owners and making a real difference in their lives.
At the GC event, AWLQ provided:
900kg of dog food – enough for 6,000 meals
200kg of cat food – enough for 4,000 meals
220 dog preventative treatments
200 cat preventative treatments
25 dog vaccinations
20 veterinary consults
30 pet beds
45 bottles of dog shampoo
Hundreds of collars, leads, harnesses, jackets, toys, bowls, and other pet items
At the Brisbane event, AWLQ provided:
600kg of pet food
50 preventative treatments
12 desexing vouchers
5 vet consult vouchers
Hundreds of leads, collars, harnesses, jackets, bowls, toys, and other pet items
Seeing the smiles on guests’ faces and knowing their pets were well cared for reminded us why this work is so important. By supporting pets, we’re not just caring for animals – we’re helping people too.
A huge thank you again to all our staff, volunteers, and supporters who made this day possible. Together, we’re ensuring that everyone has access to the support they need.
