LEAVING A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

LEAVING A GIFT IN YOUR WILL

After family and loved ones are looked after, a bequest gift may be the most significant donation many of us will be able to make.

We appreciate family and loved ones should always come first, and believe that it is an important step to talk to your family about your Will. AWLQ is grateful when people decide to include a gift in their Will to AWLQ, as this is a vital source of income for us to continue our lifesaving work.

Make or updating your Will

As our life circumstances change, so should our Will reflect this. Perhaps you have married since you last made your Will, or now have children. Your Will is an important document that must be properly thought about and prepared. AWLQ always recommends using a solicitor to make sure your Will is legal and valid. Your solicitor can advise you on the different ways of leaving a gift

Below is a checklist that can be downloaded to assist you to prepare documents to take to a solicitor – Your Will Preparation Checklist

STEP 1 – DECIDE ON THE TYPE OF GIFT YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE TO AWLQ

DIFFERENT TYPES OF GIFTS

Fixed sum of money gift: is also known as a pecuniary bequest, this gift is in the form of a specified cash amount.

Residual gift: by leaving a residual gift to the Animal Welfare League of Queensland Inc. you are instructing your Executor that, once your debts are paid and specific gifts are distributed to loved ones named in your Will, the remainder, or a percentage % of the remainder, of your Estate will be paid to the Animal Welfare League of Queensland Inc. A residual bequest is a simple way to leave a gift that needn’t interfere with any other specific bequests left to loved ones.

Whole or part of your estate: you can leave your entire estate or any part of your Estate to the Animal Welfare League of Queensland.

A specific gift or item: a gift in the form of other property such as shares, investments, vehicles, boats, or items of jewelry, or household contents (goods and chattels).

Superannuation donation: you may choose to leave your Superannuation to AWLQ but please note, you will also need to call your superfund provider ahead of time, as you will need to sign some of their own documentation and have their approval, prior to preparing your Will.

HAVE YOU MADE A PLAN FOR YOUR PET’S FUTURE?

Your dog might be your closest friend giving unconditional love, and your cat, your TV couch companion, but unfortunately they can’t fend for themselves should something happen and you aren’t able to be there for them.

Most of us assume that we will outlive our pets. What if you become ill or incapacitated and can no longer care for your pet?

Do you have a plan that will ensure that your surviving companion animals receive the care, attention and home they deserve? AWLQ’s Legacy Pets Program ensures that upon your death, your companion animals are adopted into loving homes that are best suited to their needs. Not only will your pet be placed into a loving and carefully selected home, when your pet is part of the Legacy Pets Program it will receive free veterinary check-ups and routine care for the rest of its life (conditions apply).

AWLQ’s Legacy Pets Program will provide you peace of mind knowing you will always have support available. Register your interest by completing the form below and you’ll receive a complimentary AWLQ Pet Care Plan. The AWLQ Pet Care Plan includes a ‘My pet is home alone‘ wallet card, ‘In case of emergency‘ magnet, ‘In case of emergency‘ sticker and a ‘Petcare plan checklist‘ so you can be prepared for when the unexpected happens.

HOW TO ENSURE YOUR WISHES ARE CARRIED OUT

When planning your pet’s future, AWLQ recommends that you include the following suggested wording in your Will to ensure that your wishes are carried out.

“I DIRECT that the ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE OF QLD INC. (ABN 75 521 498 584) shall care for any animals or pets which I own at the date of my death until a suitable home at the discretion of the said League shall be found for such animals or pets.”

We ask that you fill out our registration and pet care profile for each of your pets. Click here to download the form.

This information is kept on record to assist with placing your pet into a home as similar as possible to yours.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact our Bequest Manager, Sharyn Duffy, on 07 5509 9099 or by email bequests@awlqld.com.au
