AWLQ Announces Patron and Board Transitions Following Decades of Dedicated Service
- The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG steps down as Patron after years of influential advocacy for humane animal welfare
- Board members Zoe Hermans and Sylvana Wenderhold resign
- Sylvana Wenderhold recognised for 25 years of transformative national impact on animal welfare initiatives
- AWLQ acknowledges their significant contributions as the organisation enters a new phase of strategic growth
The Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) today announced the transition of three longstanding leaders whose contributions have profoundly influenced the organisation’s work, direction and impact.
AWLQ confirms that The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG has stepped down from his role as Patron. As Australia’s longest-serving former High Court Justice and an internationally respected champion of human rights and social justice, Mr Kirby brought exceptional credibility, compassion and advocacy strength to AWLQ. His final Patron’s message in the 2024/25 Impact Report reflects his deep admiration for the organisation’s resilience and its vital role in shaping a “more compassionate and humane world.”
AWLQ President Sue Spencer said:
‘We are incredibly grateful for his constant support over the years.’
AWLQ also acknowledges the resignation of Board member Zoe Hermans, whose work in community education, outreach and brand development strengthened AWLQ’s connection with students, community groups and animal lovers of all ages. Her contributions helped lay the foundations for AWLQ’s new Prevention and Advocacy department.
The organisation further recognises Sylvana Wenderhold, who departs after an extraordinary 25 years of service. Sylvana played a pivotal role in establishing two of Australia’s most influential animal welfare initiatives:
- Getting to Zero (G2Z): advancing humane, collaborative solutions to reduce euthanasia and keep pets with their families
- The National Desexing Network (NDN): a nationwide support system enabling low-cost desexing for pet owners in need
Her legacy continues to shape AWLQ’s national leadership in advocacy and prevention.
AWLQ President Sue Spencer said:
‘Zoe and Sylvana have each made significant contributions to AWLQ. Their leadership in community education and national advocacy initiatives Getting to Zero (G2Z) and the National Desexing Network (NDN) has created lasting impact for pets and people. We are deeply grateful for their work and the legacy they leave.’
As AWLQ moves forward with its 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, the organisation remains focused on excellence in animal care, expanding community support, and driving humane, evidence-based policy reform.
