Tick season is here – protect your pet before it’s too late

Beano recovering from tick paralysis

Every year, thousands of pets fall victim to the deadly paralysis tick — one of the most dangerous parasites in Australia.

These tiny creatures inject a toxin that can cause weakness, paralysis, and even death if not treated quickly.

Beano, a 2.5-year-old kelpie mix, knows this all too well. His owner noticed he was stumbling, swaying on his feet and vomiting, before discovering an engorged tick on his neck. Beano was rushed to the vet, where he was treated with anti-tick serum, shaved to check for more ticks, and closely monitored for 48 hours at AWLQ’s Community Vet Clinic. Thankfully, Beano made a full recovery.

His story is a timely reminder: prevention is always better than cure.

How you can protect your pet this tick season:

  • Stay up to date with tick prevention treatments such as NexGard Spectra for dogs and cats. These are to either repel or kill ticks before they can do harm.
  • Perform daily hands-on checks — feel for ticks all over, including inside the ears, under the chin, between toes, around the tail, and even in the genital area.
  • Know the warning signs: vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness in the hind legs, excessive salivation, coughing, breathing difficulties or noisy panting. If you notice any of these, contact your vet immediately.
