Volunteering with AWLQ’s Op Shops: Jodie’s Story
Volunteers are the beating heart of Animal Welfare League Queensland – and for the past three years, Jodie has been a familiar and friendly face at our Beenleigh Op Shop.
Drawn by a desire to give back and make a difference for animals, Jodie quickly found purpose in her role. From sorting donations to connecting with customers, her days are filled with meaningful moments, community spirit, and the joy of discovering hidden treasures.
We caught up with Jodie to learn more about her volunteering journey and what makes op shop life so special.
What drew you to volunteer at AWLQ?
I wanted to do something with purpose, and supporting animals felt like the right fit. I really enjoy giving back.
How long have you volunteered with AWLQ?
Three years.
What does your volunteer role involve?
A bit of everything! I help sort Thrifty Kitten clothing and accessories, work both back and front of house, serve customers at the register, and assist with Thrifty Kitten’s social media content. I also help sort incoming donations.
What are the highlights of volunteering with AWLQ?
I love showing customers new items and seeing their excitement when they find something special. It’s also wonderful getting to know our regulars. And it gets me out of the house!
What’s something people would be surprised to learn about volunteering at an op shop?
It’s a great, social place. You meet so many different people, both regulars and new customers. Volunteering is a great way to build confidence and gain retail and social skills, even if you’ve never done it before.
What’s your favourite item you’ve ever seen or bought in the op shop?
A vintage Tiffany & Co. necklace!
Do you have a pet?
Not at the moment, but I love animals and plan to adopt a dog in the future. For now, I dog sit my daughter’s miniature poodle, Winnie, who regularly comes for sleepovers.
What would you say to someone considering volunteering with AWLQ?
Come and give it a try! It’s very rewarding, and your time goes towards supporting the animals.
We’re so grateful to Jodie for the time, care, and enthusiasm she brings to our Beenleigh Op Shop community. Volunteers like her play a vital role in supporting our work and helping animals find a brighter future.
Whether it’s lending a hand in-store or sharing a smile with a customer, every moment volunteered makes a difference and we couldn’t do it without you.
